The coffee shop scene in Harrogate is HUGE, with so much choice in and around the town centre, where should you start? Where’s the best café in Harrogate?
I can’t believe my original ‘Best Coffee Shop Post’ was written nearly 2 years ago! Since then businesses have come and gone so I thought it was time for a revamp….plus I was very new to the blogging scene so it was really crap! So here some of the best indie coffee shops and cafes in Harrogate v2.0.
Being Harrogate born and bred we have frequented many a coffee shop on the weekends so here are our tried and tested coffee shops that we know you’ll love. You’ll have to let us know which you think is the best coffee shop in Harrogate because we can’t choose just one. In fact I think this list is over 20 now! So in no particular order…
Heal
Situated just round the corner from the Valley Gardens, between the Crown hotel and Parliament Street. Heal offers a unique blend of medical treatments and beauty therapies alongside a beautiful new coffee bar and gift shop in Harrogate’s Montpellier Quarter. They have a range of speciality coffees, drinks, cakes and pastries as well as a selection of home, retail and giftware. Their brownies are sooo good! They’re also very dog friendly too.
Pink Door
Situated just outside the town centre on up and coming Kings Road you’ll find Pink Door. Its our new ‘local’. Izzy highly recommends the cupcakes and I love their toasties. They also appear in our Most Instagrammable Places in Harrogate blog.
Artizan Café
Artizan has a great location, right next to McDonald’s. They do so much in the community and beyond, but in a nutshell…. It’s a fairtrade cafe who employ and train differently abled people, offering freshly baked cakes and light bites. They are dog friendly and offer vegan and vegetarian options.
If you’ve followed our socials for a while you’ll have seen they ran a crowd funder recently which I donated to and in exchange I was given some expert barista training. Don’t worry though, they didn’t let me near the customers!!
The Outside Inn
Izzy and I stumbled across The Outside Inn on the way back from Stump Cross Cavens one afternoon. It’s on the A59 Skipton Road where the Millstones used to be so makes a perfect stop for those out exploring the dales.
Their interior is super cosy and as well as offering very reasonably priced coffee and cake, they also have a little food & gift shop on site, ice creams, lite-bites and on Sunday’s they do a great carvery.
The Saints
Based on St Winifred’s Avenue, The Saints has recently been renamed to reflect the community it serves in the ‘saints’ area of Harrogate. It’s out of the town centre, but ideally located if you are walking along the Stray or heading to the hospital/football ground. Their bakes are out of this world if you have a sweet tooth.
Crema Café
Crema was known as ‘&’ and brought to you by the original Brew Bar guys. It’s a modern and contemporary space with coffees, pastries and a small but delicious menu on offer.
Perfectly situated near the Valley Gardens and Montpellier quarter on the Crown hotel roundabout.
Bamber & Brown
Who doesn’t want coffee from a converted horsebox and freshly made pizzas in a teepee?!
If you haven’t discovered Bamber and Brown yet, they are definitely on our hidden gem list. You can find them on the road between Harlow Carr gardens and Birk Crag. We like to park in the Harlow Carr overflow car park and walk down the lane, away from Harlow Carr and you’ll find it a little way down on your right.
Izzy and I loved the teepee which is the perfect shelter if the weather isn’t on your side and they have a box of games like giant connect 4 for the kids too which is a lovely little touch.
LMDC
My go to take away coffee stop in the town centre. LMDC is on Johns Street opposite Pitcher and Piano. It’s always really busy which is a great sign. There are so many coffee shops in Harrogate that it really does say something if a place is always busy. On a sunny day sit outside for a Parisienne vibe.
Lago Di Como
One of the best in town when it comes to mouth watering home made food. From sweet treats and bakes to focaccia and pizza. Just looking at their pictures on the Lago Di Como website makes me want to go back (and get some good photos this time lol). They are just down Beulah Street (a bit further down than Specsavers).
Westmoreland
With it’s quirky little booths and a friendly welcome guaranteed, Westmoreland is a must visit. They have started opening on selected evenings too which makes it the perfect place to visit for an after work treat. As their name suggests you can find them on Westmoreland Street.
Nomad
Looking for a town centre café that gives Mediterranean vibes? then Nomad is for you. Their menus are full of vegan and vegetarian options as well as gyros, burgers and baklava. Find them on Beulah Street.
Palm Court Café
You’ll find this traditional coffee shop just above Harrogate’s Ye Olde Sweet Shop so I dare you to visit without coming out with bags of sweets too! It’s located on the Crown hotel roundabout at the bottom of Montpellier hill where quite a few of our featured cafes can be found. If you are looking for somewhere for a pot of tea for two and a homemade scone then Palm Court is a good shout.
Hoxton North
Yep it’s another coffee shop on the Crown roundabout lol, honestly in this area you are spoilt for choice. Hoxton North is a longstanding name on the Harrogate coffee scene offering an East London-inspired café experience. They have been around since 2013 which is pretty good in todays climate, plus they are still just as bust as ever.
You can read more as they also feature in the 10 of the Best Places to Brunch blog….as do…
Baltzersen’s
A Harrogate coffee shop with a Scandinavian twist. Baltzersen’s is most famous for it’s waffles so if you have room when you pop in for a brew then I highly recommend giving them a try. It can get busy and cramped inside at peak times but they also offer plenty of outdoor seating when the weather is behaving. You’ll find them just opposite McDonalds right in the centre of Harrogate.
Bean & Bud
Bean and Bud is a little off the beaten track (about half way down Commercial Street) but every time I’ve visited they are always busy. It’s not the cheapest coffee but it’s good quality and definitely somewhere I’d suggest if you are more of a coffee connoisseur than I am!
Grindhaus
You’ll find this coffee shop in the heart of Ripley so it’s the perfect place to stop for refreshments if you are heading for a walk around Ripley Castle gardens. I love the large windows; perfect for people watching as it’s always busy in Ripley and it’s the home of the best iced coffee I’ve ever had!
Grane
One of the newer faces to Harrogate is Grane on Station Parade. It offers a modern vibe and I think the stars of the show are their sweet treats. They also have gifts and a small deli on site too…Dolce & Gabanna pasta anyone??
Sunflower Bakery
After success in Thirsk and Boroughbridge, Sunflower Bakery has now opened a branch in Harrogate. With a small but beautiful interior they offer fab bakes such as multi-coloured macarons and huge brownies. It’s another great café in the Montpellier area of Harrogate.
Manna
Another bakery with a small café is Manna on Cold Bath Road. Perfectly located for an afterschool treat or if you are out exploring the Valley Gardens. Discover their gorgeous home baked breads. Izzy says they do the BEST croissants too.
Brio Café
For the real Italian feel, there’s no where better than Brio. Serving traditional Italian focaccia paninis, classic minestrone di casa soup, waffles and viennoiserie. You can find them on the ever popular John Street in the centre of town.
Pudding Lab
The newest addition to Cold Bath Road. After having massive success in Boston Spa they have branched out to Harrogate. Expect show stopping pastries, rainbow macarons and tasty toasted sandwiches. Perfectly located if you are heading to the Valley Gardens but we found it hard to just pop in as parking is always busy on Cold Bath Road.
Kitchen + Koffee
Tucked away on a side street, just off Harlow Hill you’ll find Kitchen + Koffee. A lovely little neighbourhood café which always seems busy, maybe because of their warm welcome and delicious brunch inspired food at a reasonable price. I had poached eggs on crumpets and a latte for just £10..find that in the town centre!!
Well I’ve lost count of how many that is, and I’m sure I haven’t even covered half of all the coffee shops in Harrogate! But as with all my blogs I will only recommend places I have actually visited and because the list was so long, I haven’t managed to included some of my favourite haunts in Knaresborough and Ripon. If you want any recommendations for places further a field you are always welcome to get in touch.
